Holland Creek Enhancement Project
We will be repairing approximately 700 linear feet of stream upstream of the Broad St. bridge. Funding sources include NFWF, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, and the City of Phenix City.
The City of Phenix City has been relocating sewer siphon boxes on this reach of stream since October 2012. These siphon boxes help move sewage to the wastewater treatment plant. Siphon box replacement was imperative due to severe streambank erosion in the area. Following completion of sewer siphon work, a "stream dream tream" will begin their work.
The stream team is an interdisciplinary team of biological engineers, specialized contractors, ecologists, horticulturists, and more. Stream enhancement includes installation of large boulder or log vane structures to re-direct energy and flow. This stream enhancement will reduce erosion, stabilize streambanks, improve wildlife habitat and water quality, as well as look a whole lot better!
Is there a difference in stream restoration and enhancment?
Yes. Restoration impllies a complete return of the stream to its original unimpacted state. Urban streams can be enhancs and improved, but rarely are they returned to a completely natural state.
