Buffer Diagram

* Zone 1 is the toe of the slope located at the water's edge. This zone is planted with transplants or plugs of herbaceous wetland plants. Wetland herbaceous transplants perform best when planted in spring after the last frost.

* Zone 2 is the streambank and is planted with live stakes. These plants need to have contact with the stream, but do not need to be continuously inundated. Live stakes are harvested and installed during dormancy - typically between December and March or before bud break.

* Zone 3 is the floodplain that is occasionally inundated and contains plants that can thrive under wet or dry conditions. Zone 3 is planted with bare root seedlings or containers. Bare root seedlings are installed during dormancy between December or March, and container plants are installed during any time of the year. However, it should be noted that summer installation of container plants requires more frequent irrigation.

* Zone 4 is the upland area that is planted with vegetation that thrives in high, dry locations, which are never flooded. Zone 4 is typically planted with container plants. Install container plants at any time, but be prepared to water more freqently during summer months!
